Maiden Cliff

An early spring sunny Sunday morning and a phone call from friends with an offer for a mountain walk in our favorite Rhodope Mountain. This time the suggestion is for a place, called Maiden Cliff. The legend tells of a girl who jumped from this rock (and this is where comes the name of the rock) to avoid becoming a victim of the Turks. There are several places in Bulgaria that have the same name and the common between them is exactly this legend. So if you ever happen to be in a place, called Maiden Cliff, you’d know where it comes from.

After a quick research in internet how to get there and some rapidly prepared sandwiched we were already on the road. Our first destination and departure point was the village of Hrabrino, 15 km southwest of Plovdiv. We were supposed to walk about an hour and we read that we have to follow the white-yellow marking and the signs to hut Zdravets. In the middle of the village, where we parked the car we asked the locals and they explained us better how to reach the path that will lead us to the rocks. At first sight, everything was clear.
A view to the village somewhere on the way
We were walking south, along the river, actually upstream of the river until we reached the first point that we had to decide left or right. The problem was that there was no marking and half of us have remembered right, the others - left. Following the logic we took the left path as this was the direction we had to keep – a little bit to the east and up. But after that we lost the marking. Anyway, we were sure this is the correct path and we followed it for a long time. In about 40 minutes walking, and after a long time we have already lost the path, we saw the chapel we were told it’s on our way. When we finally reached it through some bushes and branches on our way, we realized that we have taken the wrong path. Luckily, following the direction, we managed to find the place.
In front of the chapel "St. Virgin Mary"

Close to the chapel there is a fountain with cold mountain water and here our both guides exclaimed in one voice: “We’ve been here!” They were so surprised to realize it!  They explained that a friend of theirs took them to the same place a month ago and the departure point was not Hrabrino village but Izvor village, they just didn’t remember the rock name... And there, at the chapel both ways connect in one. At the beginning they felt a little bit screwed up but the place really worth it to be seen, so soon they were happy again.

Taking the path right of the fountain, keeping south west direction and following a cart road, in about 5-10 minutes we reached the rocks.
And here it came the view, the freedom feeling, the peace, the greatness…In silence we just stood watching and deep breathing. The sun and the wind contributed to the majestic feeling. The river passes down forming wonderful canyon. In late spring probably would be greener and even more beautiful, well, we can always come back. So spectacular views that it was hard to decide which pictures to share (more pictures at the end of the itinerary).

In about an hour resting and collecting moments we went on our way back, this time we took the right path, which by the way seemed to be steeper than our invented path. But the way is going down along the river, all the time and from time to time appeared beautiful landscapes.

Here are some tips for the tourists:

Starting from Hrabrino - go upstream of the river, the direction is south west. There is a marking white-yellow and signs to hut Zdravets. In the beginning you go along a cart road. In about 5 minutes you reach a point where the way goes left and right, take the right way by the river and in 3-4 meters you’ll see the marking again. If you take the left one, you’ll lose the marking immediately. After some 200-300 meters you’ll see a yellow-orange fence and just before it, the path goes left. Then you can’t miss it if you follow the marking. The way to the chapel is steep but it’s not impossible even for kids or old people. After the chapel you take the cart road on the right and soon the rocks appear. The whole way takes about 45-60 minutes.

Starting from Izvor (Izvor is located about 4-5 km east of Hrabrino) – you park in the center, where there is only a square and the famous building from the past communist time that used to be a shop, restaurant and hotel together, the so-called “HoReMag”. Go up the street that passes by the building and maybe you can ask the locals, but the tip here is that your way passes by the cemetery which is above the village. Our friends told us that it’s about 20 minutes walking and the way is very easy. You’ll see the chapel on your right and you should continue straight to reach the cliffs.

If you happen to make this journey, don't hesitate to ask me for more details.

Another trick of having a cheap trip

As experienced travellers we all know the reservation systems of booking.com, venere.com, hostelworld.com, hotelbook.com and many more others world known or local websites. And each of us checks his favorite ones when he is looking for a good offer. They are all useful and give us good prices but most of the time we have to book early to get the best deals. And sometimes I'm really pissed off when I see "only 1 room is left" and it happens more then 3 months before the journey! Of course I'll keep using them but I have discovered another option that already started working for me.

You have probably heard or even many of you have used the famous lately websites for group buying (read some tips and information about it). The first one in Bulgaria started working over one year ago and now there are more that 50 for our small country. I've bought vouchers for restaurants, massages, hairdressers, hotels, dancing lessons and so on and it saved me money. What I soon realised is that we can buy coupons from other country's deal websites and use them for our vacations. And it's actually pretty cheap. What I bought few days ago from Romanian website was weekend for two, including breakfasts and dinners, sauna, one hour riding a pony, in the Carpathians, near Brasov, in a 3 star hotel for 45 EUR which means 11.25 EUR per bed for HB! Even in a hostel there are no such prices. Then I had a look in some other European websites and many offers came up like: 65 EUR for 4 people, 2 nights in an apartment near Rijeka, in Croatia.; 20 EUR for 4 in a mountain resort in Serbia and so on. Here you can find more that 1600 websites for group shopping all over the World.

Sure, there are some inconveniences and the biggest one is that buying from another country's website means different language and we need translation. If we don't know the language, goodle translate do a great job but we have to be very careful about what the voucher includes, terms and period of use, payment ways, reservations and so on. My advice is always connect to the accommodating hotel (or villa) before buying the voucher and check for availability.

Go discover the World now!

The "upgrade" at home

USA.SC.North Myrtle Beach.Work and Travel Program. 20 y.o. girl.Great experience.(The beginning)

We lived in absolutely empty apartment. We had only kitchen equipment but nothing more. Everybody was sleeping on air beds, in sleeping begs or whatever he/she found. We also found two armchairs and we put them on the veranda. But we were lucky and soon we had some new stuff at home.

Do you remember Darnell, the guy that took me to the hospital after the bike crash? Few days after that incident Darnell, his wife and their two little kids came to the restaurant. I was so happy that he accepted my invitation and arranged a dinner for of them. It was funny cause I told the manager that I want to use my 50% discount and he said: "OK, just let me know" when they fare done with their meals". After an hour I looked for him but I didn't find him so I talked to another manager and he finished the order as I asked him. When the first manager came back he said: "Why didn't you wait for me, I could have made you manager discount - 100%?". First I was disappointed but then I realized that this is how things had to happen. The point was that Darnell came and I could thank him.
Paulina, Victoria and me

He started to come over our house. Soon he knew almost all my roommates. We were organizing BBQs, he once took us to dinner, all of us! As he was working in a telecommunication company he offered us a telephone. We were happy, it was not necessary to go to the street phones anymore. One day Darnell came with a washing machine and computer. I was so surprised and didn't know what to say. He said: "Don't worry, I don't use them and you need them". Me and Paulina( a Polish girl) became more closer with him and we frequently were together for walks and shopping for example. He treated us as he treated his kids. We enjoyed taking care of them. The elder sister, Victoria Santana, was so cute 5-6 y.o. girl and her brother was also amazing 2 y.o. boy. When we were alone with them they were driving us crazy but in the good sense.

Everything was fine until some of the Belarusian girls decide  to go home. We checked the bills for the telephone and the Internet and we were surprised to see the bill that was like $1000! What have happened - most of the girls has talked to their friends and family in Belarus, UK, Germany without using prepayed cards as Darnell warned us in the beginning. The Internet in 2003 was not as cheap as it is now. We used some Dial-up connection and we had to pay for it 300 bugs. We mainly used the PC 5-6 people and I agreed to pay about 100 although we had to split it on equal parts. But the telephone I used only with cards. Until we knew the exact amount some of the girls left, others said that they had never made that bills and they collect only 30-40 dollars each. So finally we collected to more than $500. It was so embarrassing. Darnell was very offended, he took his stuff and we never saw him again.
Don't make a phone call unless you're ready to pay for it. Photo by: telegraph.co.uk
I met him, I took him home, he tried to please everybody and what happened - we thanked him like that. I couldn't pay for the others and I hope that he has forgiven me.
Everything on this World in comming back, now I am lied of a person that was very close to me...so when you do something just think about the consequencies.

Easy tricks for cheap flights

Flying now could not be as expensive as it was years ago, especially over short distances. There are few things we could think about before booking a flight to make it cheaper.

When, where and how we have to book our flights? Many experts have done researches as Reak Seaney who says that "airlines know a lot about our buying habits" therefore not everything that is said in internet is true. What I have noticed from my experience and is almost always working:
A plane of Wizzair
  • Book as early as possible - well, don't do it an year ago because promotions show up on airlines' websites around 3-4 months before the flight. It is said that there is an eight-week rule, which means that booking 8 weeks earlier guarantees us the best price. As a mathematician I'm inclined to believe it as there is a formula created by two scientists that proves it.
  • Find out which are the lowcost airline companies that fly in your region and frequently check their websites for offers to different destinations.
  • Study when is the low season of the place you'd like to visit and try to go then. Flights woulsd be definitely cheaper as well as hotels too.
  • Make an experiment - check one destination for a week or two and see which time of the week you'll get lower price.I've heard about Tuesday afternoon but of course it is not a rule.Although it is true that booking on Wednesday is cheaper that booking on Friday. My experience says: weekdays evenings.
  • You will notice that flights on Saturday and in the middle of the week are usually cheaper. So when you plan a trip first book the flight and after that arrange your accomodation.
  • If you book a lowcost flight try to travel only with hand luggage because for other luggage you have to pay extra. Most airlines allow between 8 kg and 15 kg for the baggage on board (usually 10kg). There are many tricks to collect all your stuff in the suitcase - here is my favorite one. Put on your heaviest and most voluminous clothes when traveling and you can easily collect a 2 week luggage in one little bag.
  • Besides adding a luggage to your ticket lowcost airlines also offer priority boarding(not needed at all);insurance;car rentals;hotel bookings, etc. Just don't take advantage of that offers, you can find them much more cheaper if needed in other websites or/and agencies.
I hope that information would work for you too. Actually there is another thing I practice sometimes - I choose a destination according to the cheapest flight I find. As still there are many places over the World I want to visit, I have a huge choice.
If you know some other tricks for better prices I'll be glad to read them in the comments.

10 tips for hiking in the mountain

The beauty of Rhodopi Mountain
Going around the mountains is a lovely hobby for many of us.Some people love it and could spend their lives in the hills. Others are also keen on that kind of trips but don't do it very frequently. And there is a big group of people(like me) that prefer going in summer.I thought that because in summer is hot we could afford not to have good equipment and of course every time I go in the mountain I  understand how wrong I have been. Here are some mistakes I have done so please don't follow them:
  1. Don't forget to take warm clothes.Even in the hottest time of the year it could be windy and cold.A hat is a must.
    Follow the tourist signs
    1. Another thing we should not overpass is having enough food. You could always get lost and it would be better if you are prepared. Also in the mountain you get more hungry than usual.
    2. The mountain is not the city.It is hot in the city but in the mountain it is still cold, the ground is cold and probably you can still find snow even if it is not very high. Be prepared with touristic shoes with rough grapple.
    3. Choose the best route for your journey, study it good and always pay attention at the tourist signs.Have a map.
    4. Bring sunglasses and sunscreen. Even in the winter the sun is strong and you could have your face burnt.
    5. Be careful in the fog

    6. It is never redundant to carry a raincoat. It won't be good to get wet if it rains.
    7. Get informed for the weather forecast. It's better not to take the trip if it has been snowing a day or two before your journey or if a dense fog is expected.
    8. Be careful if your journey would be in the hunting season and it's better not going around hunting areas. You don't want huners to think you're a wild boar, right?
    9. Wake up early and try to make your plan to end hiking in the mountain about 2 hours before it is getting dark.
    10. Don't go alone and always tell a friend where you're going.Someone should have a trace if needed.
Mountain is beautiful but could be dangerous if we don't think of good preparation and adequate equipment.Enjoy it and respect it!

    Traveler or tourist?

This question has been discussed a lot. Some people care about it others say they don't. Does it really matter? Let's see who is the traveler and who's the tourist and I'll try to give you some tips to turn into the other type if you don't like what you are...if it matters for you.
    Topcapi palace in Istanbul
Some of the main differences between tourists and travelers

    • The word tourist comes from tour. Tourists mostly travel in guided groups, move together and are dependent on one another.Travelers journey mostly alone or with a friend so they do whatever they want.
    • Tourists trust on what the guide has told them, travelers trust on locals.
    • Tourists move very quickly from one sightseeing to another while travelers prefer to explore more.
    • “Tourists don’t know where they’ve been, travelers don’t know where they’re going.”- Paul Theroux.
    • Tourists mainly trust on food they know and have tried, while travelers prefer to taste local food.
How to become a tourist from a traveler
    A guided tour in London
    1. Throw away your old backpack especially if you're traveling in a civilized country.Buy a new suitcase on wheels so that you can feel comferteble while walking.
    2. Forget about the hostels.Probably you're tired of all the smell and unknown people you have to meet, you just wanna relax in a clean room, not disturbed by anybody.
    3. Trust on the familiar international food, consumed by fork and knife.
    4. Prepare more money. Like it or not, being in 4* hotels, drinking cocktails and having massages will cost you more. But hey - this is your vacation!
How to become a traveler from a tourist
What about sleeping in a tent?
    1. Book a hostel. You'll meet people from all over the    world in your room and you could exchange some interesting information about cultures.
    2. When preparing your lugguage don't take all your clothes, just the most necessary things(watch that video) but don't forget the towel - there won't be one in the hostel.
    3. You can visit the most attractive sightseeings but pay attantion on the little streets and corners.Make your journey "a journey of discovery",find out things you have never heard about.
    4. Meet locals.Learn some words on the local language, stop somebody and ask him/her for directions, believe me it works. And don't worry if people don't know English, ask them to draw you a map or something.
Writing and reasoning I made the conclusion for myself that it doesn't matter if you sleep in a hostel or a luxury hotel,if you eat only familiar food or you try local one. It all depends on you and how you would feel comfortable on your trip, jourey, travel, vacation, holiday - call it whatever you want.
My aim is to learn more about local people, customes and culture,to be part of the place, its spirit and life.

What is the most important at all,and it applies all of us,is showing good maners and being respectful of other cultures.
